To find a worthy rival to the Robin Safari you would need to spend £120,000 plus on a Piper Dakota. The market options you have for a four-seat, fixed gear, all-metal certified aircraft, that can cruise at 130kts are limited and people have already snapped up the bargains. There is nothing for £35,950 that can come close to this 210hp powerhouse. For the price of a Cessna 150 or Grumman Traveler, you can have all this.
This aircraft will really suit a hands-on private owner looking to customize the cosmetics to suit their preferences. We were not concerned with paint or interior, more the fact it’s fully corrosion proofed internally and has six compressions so strong you can barely pull the propeller over. The airframe only has 2355hrs and is in ARC/Annual through to the year-end. The constant speed prop has only done 20hrs SPOH and the mags had a 500hr inspection in 2020. The six-cylinder normally aspirated Continental has 1300hrs and pulls hard, burning about 10gph in the cruise at 130kts IAS. The cabin is roomy with great visibility, and the type is easy to source parts for. It was designed by one of the most capable pilots of a generation, Pierre Robin, to be able to take on the 200hp retractables of its time. The Pilot magazine articles must have been flying something different because G-BBCN thunders off the ground in 200m and climbs with gusto. Landing calls for 75kts on final, with 70kts over the hedge it’s just a bit more than you might be used to, but rewarding for the keen pilot. The party piece of the Safari is the gigantic 454 Litre (100 Imperial Gallons) which give it an insane range. We could see someone who made regular flights for Duty Free fuel getting great value out of this aeroplane! In the panel, there is a Narco Audio Panel, King KT-74 Mode S Transponder, Trig TY-96 Com 8.33Khz, King KX-170B, KR-85 ADF and hardwired intercom.
Available at Bagby EGNG in North Yorkshire after the 8th of April. We have a lot of spare parts including all new Perspex, maintenance manual, parts manual, towbar and a cover. To someone who is as into aeroplanes as we are, this is a hidden treasure.
