Not much will you buy in a certified, N-reg, two-seat aeroplane for £6k in 2024. This aircraft needs some work to pass a new annual inspection, and the owner is in poor health, so we need the space.
If you haven't flown a Colt, we have flown a few over the years. You won't beat 108 mph with just 108 horsepower. It has a full electrical system, a parking brake, generous baggage space and 36 US gallon fuel tanks.
With the right pilot, these planes can operate from 400-meter strips, and properly rigged, the PA-22 series are all excellent flyers. They feature a remarkably robust undercarriage and can even taxi through a standard farm gate opening. In Alaska, many people buy these affordable planes as runabouts, and it only takes someone with some skill and imagination to give this aircraft a new lease on life.
N209SA is a 1961 Piper Colt with 5,110 hours TTAF. The 108-hp Lycoming O-235-C1B engine has 1,851 hours and 34 hours since top overhaul (STOH). The last engine overhaul was on 26th July 1967, and the top end was overhauled in June 2001. The aircraft was last recovered in July 1994. From May 1980 to 17th June 2001, the aircraft was restored, and it has been kept in a dark hangar, which has helped preserve it. The aircraft was last flown on 20th June 2008, and has been out of annual since 30th June 2011. It has a standard PA-22 interior with no modifications. The OEM Piper PA-22 scheme was last applied in 1994. Please consider the avionics to be out of date.
I've been looking through Planecheck myself for aeroplanes capable of operating from 400-meter grass strips, able to fly short sections on instruments if required, using UL91 fuel and carrying a decent useful load. I haven't found anything under £40k. Planes like the PA-22 are just sleeper aircraft—if you don't buy it, someone else will!
