Wilco Aviation is delighted to present this well-regarded version of the Europa XS to the market. Exclusively available through us, G-BYPM is based at our facility in Henstridge, Somerset, located in the picturesque South West of England.
The Europa XS is part of the British-built Europa family, a range of composite two-seat, low-wing monoplane kit aircraft. Designed by Ivan Shaw and introduced in the early 1990s, the Europa has been manufactured by Europa Aircraft and offered as a kit for amateur construction. Over 450 Europa aircraft have been completed to date.
The Europa was originally conceived as a modern kit aircraft for personal use across Europe. Its design goals included: high speed, low operating costs, ease of home construction and storage, transportability on a trailer, compatibility with Mogas fuel, a quick setup for flight (under five minutes), comfortable seating for two, and sufficient luggage capacity for extended travel. With the exception of “low cost,” most of these objectives have been successfully achieved.
Thanks to its streamlined composite design and a notably low canopy, the Europa offers impressive performance, including acceptable cruise speeds and excellent fuel efficiency, thanks to its low drag profile. The aircraft can be powered by a variety of engines, including the Rotax 912UL (80 hp / 60 kW), the 100 hp (75 kW) version as fitted in G-BYPM, the Rotax 912ULS, or the turbocharged Rotax 914 (115 hp / 86 kW).
The Europa was initially available with either monowheel landing gear or a tailwheel configuration. The monowheel option was chosen for its advantages in weight reduction and performance over a tricycle landing gear. However, due to handling challenges for less experienced pilots—including the risk of prop strikes and groundlooping—the tricycle undercarriage became the more popular option. This version retains a slight performance advantage while offering greater stability.
G-BYPM is equipped with the standard (tourer) fiberglass wings, which span 102 sq ft (9.5 m²) and feature a wing loading of 13.43 lb/ft² at maximum takeoff weight (MTOW). Alternatively, Europa aircraft can be fitted with motorglider wings, made from carbon fiber, which offer a larger span. The fuselage is common to both wing types, allowing for easy reconfiguration between the two, depending on the owner’s needs. Additionally, the wings can be removed in under five minutes for easier transportation or storage.
The Europa’s touring wing uses a distinctive Dykins 12% thickness/chord ratio airfoil, designed by Don Dykins, a former deputy Chief Aerodynamicist at Hawker Siddeley Aviation, later technical director at British Aerospace, and chief aerodynamicist for the European Airbus project.
G-BYPM is an outstanding example of the Europa XS, offering a unique combination of performance, versatility, and economy for the discerning aviator.
