We are delighted to have this Auster 5 for sale and in stock at Dunkeswell.

This Classic aircraft was recently rebuilt by Gerald Cooper at Wickenby and is one of the nicest examples we have yet to see.

All in all a stunning aircraft that will be so much fun on those short ‘off-piste’ fields !

Some History:


Aircraft number: 1097
1944 The aircraft was acquired by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and serialed as NJ728.
1944 The aircraft was allocated to 661 Squadron.
11 Jul 1946 The aircraft was retired from RAF service.
15 Nov 1946 The aircraft was re-registered as G-AIKE.
01 Sep 1965 The aircraft was badly damaged by gales at Luton, UK.
1960s The aircraft was painted up as G-ANIA.
1990s Restoration work began on this aircraft.
The aircraft was acquired by C. J. Barker
Then a full restoration was carried out by Gerry Copper of the Vintage Skunk Works at Wickenby completed in 2012.



No.661 Squadron was an Air Observation Post squadron that served in north-western Europe from August 1944 until the end of the Second World War. Air Observation Post squadrons were created to provide airborne observers for the artillery (see No.651 Squadron for more details). Most of their aircrews came from the army, and they used light aircraft (most Austers) which flew above their own guns using the altitude to spot targets over the horizon. The squadron was formed at Old Sarum on 31 August 1943. It spent the next year in the UK, and had to wait for two months after D-Day before finally moving to Normandy on 7 August 1944. After that the squadron supported the Allied armies as they advanced across France and into the Low Countries and Germany. The squadron remained in Europe until being disbanded on 31 October

3rd June London to Cardiff Air Race from White Waltham to Rhoose. S.55 RAF on air rescue attendance.
The race was won by J Stewart in Auster 5 c/n 1097 G-AIKE (extant, stored dismantled near Newark)

British Auster Mark 5;
The last WW2 Auster version. Note the full military rear top and side canopy that is a foot longer than the previous civilainized Mark. 6. The Mark 5 Auster had split trailing edge flaps, a 130 horsepower O-290-3 Lycoming engine, and a placarded stall speed of 24 knots.
