DH82A Tiger Moth £65,000.00 GBP
Wilco Aviation is pleased to offer this exceptionally well-maintained and cherished de Havilland DH82A Tiger Moth for sale, exclusively listed with us and located at Breighton Aerodrome, East Riding of Yorkshire.
The de Havilland DH82 Tiger Moth is a 1930s British biplane, designed by Geoffrey de Havilland and built by the de Havilland Aircraft Company. Originally operated by the Royal Air Force as a primary trainer aircraft, it played a significant role in pilot training. During World War II, the Tiger Moth also served in maritime surveillance, defensive operations, and even as a light bomber in some cases.
Remaining in RAF service until the early 1950s, it was eventually replaced by the de Havilland Chipmunk. Many surplus aircraft found new life in civilian aviation, and the Tiger Moth remains popular worldwide for both military and civilian use. It continues to be used for recreational flying, tailwheel training, and trial flight experiences. The de Havilland Moth Club, founded in 1975, provides a dedicated support network for owners and enthusiasts.
Originally built in 1939 as a primary trainer for the Dutch Air Force, this Tiger Moth—initially registered as N9192 (A-13)—later transitioned to the Dutch civil register as PH-UFB, followed by a series of OO Czech registrations. It eventually entered the UK registry, first as G-BSTJ, and now as G-DHZF, where it proudly displays post-war RAF colours (RCO-N) after a meticulous restoration in 1997.
Cared for with exceptional attention to detail, Zulu Foxtrot spent time at Sywell Aerodrome under the expertise of Matthew Boddington. The current owner has undertaken extensive refurbishments to ensure its continued excellence in both form and function, including new leather seats, headrests, glove pockets, and stick gaiter, new seat bases, new tyres, refurbished wheel hubs and covers, refurbished fin and rudder, refurbished skid, refurbished cockpit and locker hatches, refurbished root walkways, and refurbished engine cowl stays.
The Tiger Moth is renowned for its responsive controls and forgiving flight characteristics, making it an ideal tail-dragger trainer. Its large, forgiving wings allow it to stall at a mere 25 knots with power, and its stall and spin characteristics remain benign, making it a rewarding aircraft for pilots of all skill levels.
Despite its gentle nature, the Tiger Moth requires coordinated flight techniques and highlights pilot mishandling—an essential trait for effective flight training. While relatively easy to fly, mastering it takes skill, particularly when progressing to aerobatics. Unlike some training aircraft that compensate for pilot error, the Tiger Moth demands precision, ensuring that only those with the right aptitude advance in their training. This made it a valuable tool for military pilot selection, helping to distinguish those suited for high-performance fighter aircraft from those better suited to other aviation roles.
A comprehensive service history is available, fully compliant with the Service Manual and covering both airframe and engine records.
For those seeking a historically significant, beautifully restored, and well-maintained Tiger Moth, G-DHZF represents an exceptional opportunity.
