Quad City Challenger II (BFC version)

Walk around video link https://youtu.be/_hvbtQbD-GM

The Challenger design celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2023 and with more than 4000 kits delivered, probably one of the most popular designs!

The Challenger microlight is a high-wing, tricycle-gear kit aircraft. The frame structure is built from aircraft grade 6061-T6 aluminium alloy tubing. Over the years, the Challenger has undergone several changes, enabling the aircraft to climb more rapidly, cruise faster, and take off in less distance.

Flying in a Challenger is by all accounts breathtaking. The Challenger allows you the ability to remove the doors, giving you a spectacular view of the world below you. The open structure will give you an overwhelming sense of freedom like you’ve never experienced before. There is nothing else like it, taxiing down the bumpy grass, feeling the wheels leave the ground for the first time, feeling the wind through your hair, and then everything gets quiet as you float up and away, escaping into a whole different world. 😉

This is the tandem 2-seater, with a Rotax 582 engine and a 3 bladed ground adjustable propeller. This is the BFC version benefitting from a list of modifications as proposed by the LAA Engineering Department to improve the very popular USA design. Please search for the 9 pages LAA technical document with the following reference for the full list (BFC TADS 177 - QUAD CITY CHALLENGER II).

Many of these improvements can now be ordered directly from Quad City Aircraft with new kits or to modify existing aircraft – for example the rudder and tail fin height has been increased by 10” for the UK and is now a popular improvement used in the USA and Canada to improve the directional stability where some models can be used on snow skis and floats in addition to the standard wheeled layout. There is a lot of info on challengers101.com and on uflyit.com/challeng1.htm for hours of enjoyable “research”!

It is fitted with full dual controls and can be flown by both P1 & P2. When flying solo, it is flown from the front seat. The fighter-jet-like cockpit and wrap around canopy/doors allow an incredible all-round view to help you enjoy your travels. It comes complete with doors but can be flown without these for the full fresh air experience.

Reg: G-MYPZ (1999)
TTAF: 65 hrs
TTE: ROTAX 582 Blue Top @ 42 hrs
Propeller: Arplast Eco Prop 3 blade ground adjustable

The last LAA Permit to Fly was issued on 30/03/2016 and expired on 29/03/2017. It’s been in dry storage in the custom-built trailer since the sale to the previous owners shortly after completion of the LAA inspector permit re-issue flight in March 2016. I believe I’m the 4th owner and it was purchased by me in Sept 2022.

At the light 182kg dry weight it can easily be trailer transported by the new owner. There is a shoebox full of logbooks, manuals, and other paperwork to explain the life story of the aircraft, as well as some spare parts. It comes with painted wheel spats ready to fit the main wheels, and a new streamlined grp part that can be fitted to the top of the cockpit to closely fit the propeller reduction drive pulley area.

Genuine reason for sale as I purchased a share in another aircraft and I can’t justify holding on to G-MYPZ any longer!

Here is an opportunity to acquire a low hour Challenger 2 with the more powerful 582 Blue Top engine, a full instrument panel and the very useful 50L aluminium petrol tank for longer trips. Included in the sale is the custom-built double axel trailer with good tyres and an LED light board. Despite being stored unwashed in the nice protective trailer for a few years, the lovely shiny paint condition can be seen to be glistening in some of the photos and videos available to share.

It shouldn’t take much TLC to get airworthy again. Due to the time since the last PtF, it will need a fresh 12V battery and replacement fuel pipes. The tyres still hold air and seems to be in good condition, and the hydraulic disc brakes work fine. The re-permitting inspection by your friendly LAA inspector should ensure a safe aircraft for many years of flying adventures visiting some of the 100’s of farm strips around the UK!

I would love to see her flying again, so optimistic offers around £4900 will be considered from serious buyers.

I do have the following items available currently, for separate negotiated sale to the buyer if of interest:
(1) A handheld Icom IC-A24E 8.33 vhf radio. The radio is in great condition and complete with a spare battery, a 2 plug GA headset adapter cable, an original Icom desktop charger and a 12V cabled car charger.
(2) A brand new MGL Avionics Blaze EMS-2 engine monitor complete with fuel flow sensor.
(3) As the Rotax 582 was setup for premix operation as purchased, I got the correct oil injection pump and parts (new) from Ecclestone Aviation that can be fitted to eliminate the premixing.
(4) A 2 plug GA David Clark headset in very good condition.

More photos of the aircraft and logbooks can be shared via email after a chat to help you understand the history and the bargain opportunity.
